The Real Junk Food Project is a global, organic network of ‘pay as you feel’ cafes that divert perfectly edible food destined for waste and use it to create delicious and healthy meals. We are on an environmental mission with great social benefits.
Why do we do this?
Roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year — approximately 1.3 billion tonnes — gets lost or wasted whilst Some 795 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead a healthy active life. That’s about one in nine people on earth.
We believe that this has to stop, and it needs to happen in our lifetime, to ensure the next generation do not suffer from our ignorance: Here is a link to the national website: https://therealjunkfoodproject.org/about/
A few weeks ago The Real Junk Food Project launched Fuel for School: operating healthy breakfast clubs and takeaway food boutique for the parents to ensure primary school children do not turn up to class hungry. It is a great socially & environmentally way for schools to engage with parents, have a watch here https://youtu.be/0ssEGwm1tWM
How can we talk about being a rich and responsible society when we’ve got so many children arriving at school too hungry to learn, whilst the UK is simultaneously wasting 15 million tonnes of food a year?
“Tackling food education at a grass roots level is a sustainable approach to creating systematic changes within the food industry. Providing young people and adults with a basic knowledge of food, and the access to food itself through the Fuel For School concept is both exciting and rewarding, and will effectively put an end to the term ‘food waste’ as we currently understand it” – Adam Smith
